ETHICAL DESIGN | Suno

Suno Fall 2011 Collection, collage from Please Magazine, David Stettler

Taken from their website - "SUNO is a New York based womenswear label founded in 2008 by Max Osterweis in collaboration with designer Erin Beatty. The collection was launched in Spring 2009 after post-election violence threatened to damage the economy and industry in Kenya, a long time second home to Osterweis.

Using vintage Kenyan textiles that Osterweis had been collecting for years, they created their first small collection, produced predominantly in Kenya. The collection was represented in itsfirst season by Opening Ceremony, Maria Luisa, Enny di Monaco and Ikram.

Since its inception, SUNO has evolved its business to include production in Kenya, India, Peru and its home base of New York. Via a combination of traditional, local techniques and high-end tailoring, as well as an emphasis on fit and fabric, SUNO is able to offer a global, unique view of the luxury world in an accessible way."

TRAVEL | Packing up at Lake Titicaca, Peru

Caught this shot when I was on Amanti Island, Titicaca Peru last year. I love the magenta, red and florals. Such a beautiful combination of textiles.

FINDS | filipino macrame & le specs

Vintage handcrafted macrame bag (Philippines), vintage Le Specs sunnies
Whilst perusing my local flea market in Aus, I stumbled across this delicate macrame bag that immediately screamed 70's summer. I enquired about the price and the lady shouted, "50c, it's from the Philippines.....I bought it at the airport...". The lady was from Thailand but had travelled all over the world, including south east asia, Russia and PNG. I was so excited because of my love of vintage handicrafts....AND the fact that it  originally came from the Philippines, my parents native homeland. All I can say is, I can't wait till  my next trip back home to phil.....

TRAVEL | basket bags from Cuba

Whilst wandering through the streets of Trinidad, a tiny coastal town in Cuba, I stumbled across this quaint open house. I thought it was a shop, but there was no one there, only a bare wall filled with the most beautiful straw basket bags....

RECUERDOS | 'Trapelakucha' de los Mapuches

Wearing handmade 'Trapelakucha' pendant (Chile), vintage navajo jacket, vintage denim cutoffs

I remember when I crossed the Andes over from Santiago, Chile, into Mendoza, Argentina the iced capped mountains looking so serene, the sunlight fading into the background. I was clutching onto a “Trapelakucha”, a giant silver pendant I had picked up in Santiago. I remember scurrying around the different venders, trying to find out as much information as I possibly could on the strikingly enigmatic silverware. In her swift Chilean Spanish, a woman explained that the two birds represent the equilibrium between man and woman; the top representing el cielo (the sky) spiritual plane whilst the bottom pentagon shaped plate symbolising la tierra (the earth). Binding the two are three silver links, a metaphorical staircase representing the mapuche’s journey between the two worlds. It is especially worn by women to offer protection, kind of like a badge of honour and grace. When I wear it now, I’ll always remember what it represents, and the journey it took me to get there.
